Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived from Illinois via Portland, Oregon, on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and named "Seattle" in 1852, after Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.Logging was Seattle's first major industry, but by the late- 19th century, the city had become a commercial and shipbuilding center as a gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Growth after World War II was partially due to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The Seattle area developed as a technology center beginning in the 1980s, with companies like Microsoft becoming established in the region. In 1994, Internet retailer Amazon was founded in Seattle. From 1918 to 1951, nearly two dozen jazz nightclubs existed along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/International District, to the Central District. Seattle is also the birthplace of rock musician Jimi Hendrix and the alternative rock subgenre grunge.
Everett is the county seat of and the largest city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. Named for Everett Colby, son of founder Charles L. Colby, it lies 25 miles (40 km) north of Seattle. The city had a total population of 103,019 at the 2010 census, making it the 7th largest in the state and fifth-largest in the Puget Sound area. It received an All-America City Award in 2002.Everett is home to the largest public marina on the west coast of the United States and is the western terminus of the western segment of U.S. Route 2. It is also home to Boeing's assembly plant for the 747, 767, 777 and the new 787. Boeing's Everett facility is known for being the largest building in the world by volume at 116.5 million cubic feet (3,300,000 m 3).In 1984, Everett was selected as the site of a U.S. Navy Homeport, Naval Station Everett. The aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz (CVN-68) has replaced the Lincoln as Everett's homeported ship, as of March 9, 2012. Everett is also home to the Port of Everett, an international shipping port that brings trade, commerce, jobs and recreational opportunities to the city.In 2003, Xfinity Arena (then known as Everett Events Center) opened Everett to tourism. The $83 million arena continues to host events, once exclusive to Seattle's KeyArena, to the present day. The arena's "Twin Masts" are a signature of the Everett skyline. It hosts events such as concerts, trade shows, hockey (Everett Silvertips), and high school graduations. However, as of June 28, 2016 the arena may be taken over by the City of Everett since the arena has continued to operate in the red since 2011, thus possibly moving up the take over date by the city from 2026 to a sooner date.

As the third-largest city in the Seattle metropolitan area, Bellevue has variously been characterized as an edge city, a boomburb, or satellite city.
