Burlington is Vermont's most populous city and county seat of Chittenden County, located 45 miles south of the Canadian border and 95 miles south of Montreal, with a 2020 population of 44,743. Chartered in 1761 and named after John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland, the city was settled in 1770 and served as a capital of the Vermont Republic before incorporating as Vermont's third city on November 18, 1892. Rutland became one of the world's leading marble producers after large deposits were discovered in the early 19th century and railroad service arrived in 1851, attracting Italian immigrant workers to the industry. White River Junction is an unincorporated village and census-designated place in Hartford, Windsor County, Vermont, with a population of 2,528 as of the 2020 census. Located at the confluence of the White River and Connecticut River, the village served as Vermont's most important railroad community from the 1840s until rail declined in the 1950s-1960s, with five railroad lines laid between 1847 and 1863 creating an eight-track crossing served by 50 daily passenger trains. The White River Junction Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and expanded in 2002, features at least 29 buildings showcasing Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Richardsonian Romanesque, Italianate, and Romanesque architecture, including the 1924 Coolidge Hotel. The village hosted the Vermont State Fair from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century and sits within five minutes of Hanover, New Hampshire, home to Dartmouth College.
